LocalGov Day 2026

Lake Theatre, Loft by the Lake, Vienna

Directions (opens in new tab)

Starts at 08:00

A day in Vienna for everyone who wants to shape the digital future of their municipality.

The day at a glance

Whether it is citizen services, data protection or new AI applications: digitalisation sets big tasks for towns and municipalities. In uncertain times one question becomes ever more important: who actually controls the data and the systems that public administration relies on? Digital sovereignty and open source are no longer a topic for federal governments and the EU alone, they concern every municipality.

At the first LocalGov Day in Vienna, representatives from municipalities, administration, politics and the IT industry come together to find answers: which solutions already exist, what can municipalities learn from each other, and how do they shape their digital future on their own terms?

Keynote In English

Together, not alone: how UK councils succeeded with LocalGov Drupal

LocalGov Drupal began when councils in the United Kingdom chose to share one codebase instead of each building their own website. Will Callaghan was there from the start. He tells how the website of one council became a platform for many, how local governments and local suppliers worked side by side, and what Austrian municipalities can learn from it.

What is LocalGov Drupal?

LocalGov Drupal is a free, open-source website platform for councils and municipalities, built on Drupal (opens in new tab). It was created by councils in the United Kingdom, who share one codebase instead of each building their own website, and it provides ready-made features for typical council content such as services, guides, news, events and directories. It is also used in Ireland, France and Austria.

Is LocalGov Drupal free?

Yes. The software is open source under the GPL licence, like Drupal itself, so there are no licence fees. Municipalities pay only for what they need around it, such as hosting, setup, design and support, either from their own team or from a local supplier.

Is LocalGov Drupal a digital public good?

Yes. Since September 2026, LocalGov Drupal has been a verified digital public good, listed in the registry of the Digital Public Goods Alliance (opens in new tab). Digital public goods are open-source solutions that meet the DPG Standard: an open licence, clear ownership, privacy and do-no-harm by design, and relevance to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Who organises LocalGov Day?

LocalGov Day is an independent community event organised by Nico Grienauer and ACOLONO GmbH, who also initiated the Austrian network LocalGov Drupal Austria (opens in new tab). It is not an official LocalGov Drupal website. Details are in the imprint.
